Golden Tigers rebound against Morehouse in game two

Elgin Woodside and Ken Spears hit homeruns

PHENIX CITY, Ala. | The Tuskegee University baseball team split with Morehouse College in their season-opening doubleheader played in Phenix City on Friday in non-conference action.

Game 1

The Tuskegee University baseball team got a pair of homeruns, but fell victim to a five-run seventh inning as Morehouse College rallied for a 9-7 non-conference victory at Darnell-Nelson Field Friday afternoon.

After Morehouse scored a pair of runs in the top of the first, Tuskegee (0-1) scored four unanswered runs with a pair of runs in the first, one in the second and one in the third. The Golden Tigers took a 3-2 lead when Evan Kearse doubled to centerfield, knocking in Travais Hylton. The lead was extended in the third when Clinton Crews drew a bases loaded walk, scoring Ricky Green from third.

After Morehouse tied the game in the fourth, Tuskegee scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 7-3 lead. The Golden Tigers used a solo shot by Elgin Woodside to take a 5-3 lead, before Crews drove a ball over the right field wall to extend the lead to four runs. Morehouse added a run in the sixth to trim the lead to 7-4, before the Golden Tigers turned the game over to Christopher Emerson.

Morehouse (2-1) was able to score five runs in the top of the seventh inning, highlighted by a three-run homerun by Jason Davis to push the Maroon Tigers to a 9-7 lead. Tuskegee was unable get a baserunner on in the seventh inning as the game ended with Kristopher Skinner earning the save.

Green, Woodside and Gemini Jackson each collected a pair of hits for Tuskegee. Crews finished with three runs batted in, while Woodside finished with a pair.

Emerson (0-1) suffered the loss, going just one inning and allowing five runs off of three hits - none of the runs were earned. Trey Nelson earned the start and went six innings, allowing four runs - one earned - off of six hits. He also recorded three strikeouts with just one walk.

Game 2

Joseph Mauldin shut down the Morehouse College bats in the nightcap, while Elgin Woodside, Christian Marshall and Ken Spears both homered in a 12-2 Tuskegee University non-conference victory at Darnell-Nelson Field Friday afternoon.

Tuskegee (1-1) broke the game open with a three-run second inning to take a 4-0 lead, when Matthew Reed doubled in Travais Hylton from second after a stolen base to give Tuskegee a 2-0 lead. The lead was extended when Woodside singled through the right side scoring Evan Kearse and Reed for a 4-0 lead.

The Golden Tigers continued to stretch the game open in the fifth after a single Morehouse run in the third inning.

Woodside started the inning in a big way for Tuskegee, hitting a solo homerun - his second of the day - over the centerfield wall at Darnell-Nelson Field. After Alexander Henderson reached on a passed ball strikeout, he stole second but was able to jog home when Spears - a pinch hitter - drilled a pitch over the right field wall for a 8-1 lead. The lead was extended even more Hylton reached after being hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on a wild pitch to make the lead 8-1; followed by Reed reaching via a walk and later scored on a throwing error by the shortstop to extend the lead to 9-1.

Marshall added his first career homerun in the sixth inning for the Golden Tigers.

Mauldin (1-0) pitched a complete game, allowing just two runs - one earned - off of three hits. He also walked just one and struck out four in the win.

Woodside finished the second game 4-for-4 with three singles, three runs scored, three runs batted in and a homerun. Henderson finished with a pair of hits, going 2-for-3 with a double and a run batted in. Samuel Glickman, Spears and Reed each picked up a hit in the win.

The Golden Tigers return to action Wednesday, February 10 against Selma University at Paterson Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1 pm and is scheduled as a doubleheader.
