Tuskegee falls to Columbus State

Matthew Reed hits first career homerun

COLUMBUS, Ga. | The Tuskegee University baseball team returned to the diamond for the first time since this weekend, falling to Columbus State University 14-3 in non-conference action at Burger King Stadium Wednesday afternoon.

Matthew Reed hit a three-run homerun for Tuskegee (2-9) in the sixth inning Wednesday, breaking a streak of 30 innings that the Golden Tigers were held off the scoreboard. The homerun was the first of the freshman's career and is the sixth of the season for the Golden Tigers as a team.

The Golden Tigers were able to scratch out six hits against Columbus State starter Ryan Ihle (1-0), with the first coming in the third off the bat of Ryan Green. They were able to get a hit in the fourth off the bat of Tyler Wright, before stringing three hits together in the sixth when Miles Martin and Elgin Woodside singled before the Reed homerun.

Columbus State (10-2) scored runs in each of the first four innings, with the big blow coming in the third with four runs to put the game out of reach at 8-0. They were able to get two more in the fourth, before ending the game in the bottom of the eighth with a pair of runs.

Christopher Emerson (0-3) suffered the loss for Tuskegee, working into the fourth inning and allowing 11 runs off 10 hits, while striking out one. Trey Nelson and Desmond Jones came in to work the final 4.1 innings, allowing three runs (one earned) off of five hits.

Tuskegee returns to action Wednesday, March 2, on the road as they face the University of Montevallo before returning home to open conference play on March 5 against Kentucky State.
