TUSKEGEE, Ala. | The Tuskegee University women's basketball team will look to rebound Friday night on the road against the University of West Georgia, looking to avoid losing back-to-back games for the first time this season. Tip is set for 7 pm (est) Friday night at the Coliseum on the UWG campus.
Tuskegee (1-2) has played five games - which include their two exhibition games - this season, and have yet to drop back-to-back games, responding after each loss with a victory. The Tigerettes enter the game against West Georgia, who will be playing their first game of the season - averaging 67 points per game in the three regular season games, including a 75-65 setback at the hands of Montevallo on Tuesday night - their first true road game.
Senior
Rachel Brownlee leads the Tigerettes in scoring this season, averaging 21 points per game - including a career-high 28 against UAH in the second regular season game. The senior, the preseason SIACÂ Player of the Year, has scored 20-plus points twice in the regular season and including exhibition games - four out of five contests. The only game in which she did not hit the 20-point mark was against North Alabama, when she hit for 15. Brownlee is also shooting the ball at a good pace through three games, hitting 40.4 (21-of-52) percent from the floor and 55.6 (5-of-9) from beyond the arc. The senior, who has a streak of 29 consecutive games in double figures, is also shooting 76.2 (16-of-21) from the free throw line and is averaging six rebounds per game.
Meanwhile, freshman
Taylor Miller has scored in double figures in each game this season, and is averaging 13.3 points per game in three regular season games. The Valley (Ala.) native scored a career-high 17 points against UAH (11/12/16) , and despite being in foul trouble in the Tigerettes' last game against Montevallo, she added 10 in the loss. Miller is also averaging 1.7 assists from three positions on the floor for head coach
Quacy Barnes-Timmons.
Although the duo are the players scoring in double figures for Tuskegee,
Jamese Abney (9.0 ppg) and
Teja Finley (8.0 ppg) have contributed off the bench for the Tigerettes. Abney is shooting 77.8 (7-of-9) from the free throw line, whiel Finley is averaging 4.7 rebounds per game. A trio of post players are near the top of the team leaderboard in rebounds this season led by
Ashiala Jackson with a team-high 6.3 rebounds per game, while
Cheyanne Williams is averaging 5.7 and
Jade Wilson 5.3.
The two teams met early last season, with the Tigerettes coming away with a 71-69 victory following a last season three-pointer.
