TUSKEGEE, Ala. | Aryana Jackson led three players in double figures as the Tigerettes from Tuskegee University recorded their first conference victory, 66-57, over Lane College at Chappie James Arena Thursday night.
Jackson led Tuskegee (2-13, 1-6 SIAC) with 21 points, her third consecutive game in double figures since joining the Tigerettes this month. She finished the night 6-of-15 from the floor (4-of-13) from beyond the arc, and 5-of-8 from the free throw line.
She was joined in double figures by
Rachel Brownlee with 18 points and nine rebounds, helping the Tigerettes end a losing streak that started in November.
Demetries McNealey came off the bench to add 10 points, while
Uche Ibebunjo added 10 rebounds – her second consecutive double-digit rebounding effort.
The Tigerettes finished the night shooting 46 (23-of-50) percent from the floor, including 35 (7-of-20) from beyond the arc. They also shot 65 (13-of-20) percent from the free throw line, while winning the rebounding title 41-33 and forcing 23 Lane turnovers.
Tashara Jones led Lane (2-14, 2-6 SIAC) with a game-high 26 points, while Kyana Johnson added 10 for the Lady Dragons who shot 37.5 (21-of-56) percent from the floor.
After leading at halftime, Tuskegee battled in the third quarter as Lane came back and tied the contest at 38-all with 2:34 to play in the quarter. From there, Tuskegee went on an 8-2 run when Jackson knocked down a three-pointer and lay-up to extend the lead to 43-38 with 1:44 to play in the quarter.
The lead was extended to 46-38 with 55 seconds remaining in the quarter when McNealey hit one of her two three-pointers, before Lane hit two free throws to close the quarter.
Lane would only to get to within four at 54-50 with 4:23 to play in the game, before the Tigerettes went on an 8-0 run to extend the lead to 62-50 with 58 seconds remaining. In the run, the Tigerettes used baskets from McNealey (a three-pointer and lay-up) and Brownlee to pull away.
The Tigerettes used clutch free throw shooting down the stretch to ice the conference victory.
Tuskegee returns to action Saturday against LeMoyne-Owen in SIAC action. Tip is schedule for 1 pm inside Chappie James Arena.
