TUSKEGEE, Ala. | Aryana Jackson scored in double figures for the fourth consecutive game, leading the Tuskegee University women's basketball game to their second consecutive victory, defeating LeMoyne-Owen 68-55 in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) action at Chappie James Arena Saturday afternoon.
Jackson led Tuskegee (3-13, 2-6 SIAC) with 21 points on 7-of-18 shooting from the floor, including 6-of-12 from beyond the arc.
Rachel Brownlee scored in double figures for the 15th time this season, adding 19 points and nine rebounds.
Uche Ibebunjo added 10 points and eight rebounds, while
Halle Bentley grabbed 12 rebounds.
LeMoyne-Owen (5-12, 3-6 SIAC) was led by Teresa Mays with 14, while Shanteria Miller and Kardejah Jamerson each added 10 in the loss.
Tuskegee jumped out to an early lead, using a 9-0 run in the first four minutes of the game. After LeMoyne-Owen scored the game's first basket, Jackson reeled off five consecutive points to jump out on top 5-2 with 7:54 to play in the opening period. The run continued with baskets from Ibebunjo and Bentley with 6:07 to play in the opening quarter.
The Tigerettes were able to keep the pressure on LeMoyne-Owen as they used an 11-0 at the end of the first quarter and the beginning of the second quarter. After a jumper by Kardejah Jamerson with 36 seconds to play in the first quarter, Jackson connected on a three to give Tuskegee a 22-11 lead at the end of the opening stanza.
The run continued into the second quarter with another three from Jackson – who had outscored LeMoyne-Owen 15-13 before heading to the bench with two fouls four minutes into the second quarter.
Jesslyn Mahone drove to the basket for a lay-up, followed by a Jackson three to push the lead to 31-13 with 7:16 remaining in the half.
LeMoyne-Owen was able to cut the first half lead to 14 with 4:14 remaining in the half, before the Tigerettes scored six of the last eight points of the half for the 17-point lead at intermission.
The second half started off the same way the first ended, with Jackson hitting a three from the corner to give Tuskegee their biggest lead of the game at 20 (40-20). LeMoyne-Owen was able to put together a run with back-to-back three-pointers from Shantiera Miller to trim the lead to 43-30 with just over five minutes to play in the third quarter.
For each run that LeMoyne-Owen had in the second half, Tuskegee had an answer as they kept the lead at 12 for much of the half. LeMoyne-Owen did get to within 10 at 63-53 with 1:44 remaining in the contest on a pair of steal and baskets.
The Tigerettes return to action next Thursday on the road against Fort Valley State, as part of a two-game road trip to the state of Georgia. Tip for that game is scheduled for 6 pm (est) at HPE Basketball Arena.
