MOBILE, Ala. | For the second consecutive game, the Tuskegee University Golden Tigers found themselves tied at intermission.
However, this time around, Tuskegee ended a two-game losing streak with a 53-48 victory over Spring Hill College on the road in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic (SIAC) opener for both teams.
Camden Foster returned to double figures as he led Tuskegee (5-3, 1-0 SIAC) with 13 points and four rebounds. He finished 4-of-11 from the floor, including 3-of-7 from beyond the arc.
James Eads,
James Vinson and
Kevin May each finished with eight points, with May adding seven rebounds and two assists.
The Golden Tigers finished the night shooting 30.2 (16-of-53) percent from the floor, and 27.3 (6-of-22) percent from beyond the arc. They finished shooting 71.4 (15-of-21) percent from the free throw line, while grabbing 29 rebounds. The Golden Tigers forced 21 turnovers, while committing only five themselves.
Spring Hill (1-5, 0-1 SIAC) was led Sawyer Glick with 14 points and six rebounds, while Dejan Stefanovic added 12 points.
The Badgers finished the night shooting 41.5 (17-of-41) percent from the floor and 33.3 (2-of-6) percent from beyond the arc. They also shot 75 (12-of-16) percent from the free throw line, while grabbing 37 rebounds.
After trading baskets with Spring Hill in the first half, the two teams were knotted at 28-all at halftime; however, Tuskegee was able to open a lead when Eads finished off a dunk (off of an assist from Vinson) and hit the free throw after being fouled with 11:25 remaining in the contest. That basket gave Tuskegee a 35-31 lead with 11:25 remaining.
The lead was pushed to 37-31 when Eads connected on a jumper with 9:44 to play.
Each time Spring Hill would get close, including at 37-36 with 6:27 to play, Tuskegee would have an answer – including a three-pointer with 6:15 to play from Foster that pushed the lead back to four at 40-36.
The lead would stay at three for the remainder of the game, including at 47-44, until Jarrett Calhoun connected on a lay-up with just 38 seconds remaining in the game to bring Spring Hill to within a point at 47-46. Following the basket by Calhoun, Tuskegee called a timeout and forced the Badgers to foul.
May got the ball in his hands immediately following the timeout, and promptly knocked down both free throws for Tuskegee with 18 seconds remaining to extend the lead back to three at 49-46 – forcing a Spring Hill timeout. Spring Hill had an opportunity to trim the lead back down as May fouled Jared Holland with just eight seconds remaining, and Holland was able to trim the lead to one at 49-48.
However, Tuskegee was able to seal the win at the line when
Joshua Culver calmly stepped to the line with just four seconds remaining and sank both free throws for the final margin.
Tuskegee returns to action Saturday night hosting Morehouse College at Chappie James Arena, with tip scheduled for 5 pm (moved back from its original time of 3:30 pm). The game will follow the women's game against Columbus State University.
