VALDOSTA, Ga. | Demetries McNealey connected on a three-pointer with 35 seconds remaining that helped seal a 71-69 victory for Tuskegee over West Georgia Sunday afternoon.
After a free throw from West Georgia's Katrina Littlepage trimmed the Tuskegee lead to 67-66 with 43 seconds remaining, McNealey quickly came down the court and drained a three from the right wing – right in front of her bench.
West Georgia answered with a three of their own, that bounced off the front of the iron and in, before
Rachel Brownlee hit the back end of a two-shot foul to a two-point lead. The Lady Wolves were able to get a shot off before the buzzer, but it wedged itself between the rim and backboard giving Tuskegee the victory.
Tuskegee trailed for most of the game, including with 1:23 remaining in the game with West Georgia leading 65-64. The game saw six lead changes, and the game was tied three times.
Chelsea Azore led Tuskegee (1-1) with 18 points, playing 38 minutes and connecting on 57.1 (8-of-14) percent of her shots from the field. She paced four players in double figures with Brownlee adding 14 (6-of-12 from the floor) points and seven rebounds, while freshman
Kierra Ward added 13 and McNealey 12.
Tuskegee shot 47.2 (25-of-53) percent from the floor, including 40 (10-of-25) percent from beyond the arc. The Tigerettes finished the night shooting 73.3 (11-of-15) percent from the free throw line.
Tuskegee won the rebounding battle 44-22, including grabbing 14 offensive rebounds.
West Georgia was led Littlepage with 24 points, while April Levy added 15 in the loss.
The Lady Wolves shot just 39.7 (23-of-58) percent from the floor, and 25 (3-of-12) percent from beyond the arc. The shot 80 (20-of-25) percent from the free throw line
The Tigerettes return to action this week on the road Thursday at the University of North Alabama, with tip scheduled for 6 pm. They will stay in north Alabama as they take on the University of Alabama-Huntsville at 7 pm on Friday.
