MOBILE, Ala. | The Tuskegee University volleyball team fell to SIAC-leading Kentucky State 3-1 (25-21,20-25,19-25,16-25) in their opening match at the SIAC West Cluster hosted by Spring Hill College.
Pamela Allen posted a match-high 15 kills on 30 attempts, while hitting .300 for Tuskegee (10-10, 8-7 SIAC).
Jacqueline Wilson finished in double figures with 12 kills on 37 attempts, while hitting .108.
Jamiah Breda-Nixon finished with eight kills, two service aces and 13 digs to pace the Tigerettes; while
Morgan Scrivens finished with 33 assists and
Zahria Radford 10 digs.
Meanwhile, Payton Richardson led Kentucky State (15-8, 14-0 SIAC) with 13 kills, while Tahje Ochs added 10. Anjelique Kyle recorded a match-high 41 assists, while Kiara Rivera added 14 digs.
It was just the fifth time in 14 SIAC matches that Kentucky State dropped a set, and the second time to Tuskegee.
In the opening set, the two teams traded points for the first nine serves, until Kentucky State was able to open a 7-4 lead and their biggest lead at 14-10 midway through the first set.
The Tigerettes battled back with five consecutive points to take a 15-10 lead, using a pair of kills from
Jacqueline Wilson and kills from
Donovan Wingfield and
Jamiah Breda-Nixon. After Kentucky State battled back to take a 17-15 lead, the two teams traded points that tied the first set 20-all.
Following a
Pamela Allen kill gave Tuskegee a 21-20 lead, she recorded another one that pushed the lead to 22-21. From that point, the Tigerettes scored the next three points, including a kill from Breda-Nixon to help claim the first set.
In the second set, Kentucky State was able to tie the match overall as they raced to a 7-0 lead. They were able to keep the lead at seven for most of the set until Tuskegee was able to trim it down to 21-17 with five consecutive points highlighted by a pair of aces by Breda-Nixon. Kentucky State was able to put the set away with a pair of points at the end, winning 25-20.
The third set starting off much like the first, but ended like the second set. The two teams traded the first seven points, until Kentucky State was able to extend the lead to five at 11-6. From there, Tuskegee scored five consecutive points to tie the set at 11-all and took their first lead of the set at 14-13. From there, the two teams traded points until Kentucky State took an 18-17 lead and pushed it to 22-17. The Tigerettes were able to trim the lead down to 22-19, before Kentucky State scored the final three points of the set to capture the point.
In the final set, Kentucky State jumped ahead early and built as big as an eight-point lead before putting the match away 25-16.
