The Tuskegee Tigerettes earned a perfect 3-0 record on their home floor of the Daniel 'Chappie' James Center Saturday afternoon when they defeated the Lady Warhawks of Auburn-Montgomery in a wire-to-wire victory 73-61 victory. The Tigerettes (3-4 overall) led AUM (6-4 overall) by as many as 23 points before the visitors went on a furious rally to trim the lead down to seven points with under five minutes left. But,
Tarsha Askew's team left no doubt as they managed to shoot nearly 43 percent from the field for the entire game (27-for-63).
"We really just wanted to go out and set the tone," Askew said. "This is the third game of this week, so fatigue played a factor in the second half. But in the first half, we wanted to get out of the gate good."
Senior
Kajuanna Rivers scored a game-high 18 points and was one of four TU players to score at least ten points in the victory.
Alannah Vincent picked up her second double-double in as many games, as she managed to get 11 points and 14 rebounds.
Marie McAbee and
Chelsea Azore also chipped in, with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Askew was quick to praise her star point guard for making the changes necessary in order for the team to succeed.
"For Kajuanna, it's a new role for her in being a scorer, which I knew she could," Askew said. "It's just a matter of her getting comfortable. She can give you 18 points every night. So, we're still looking for that from her."
The fatigue from the Tigerettes led to a rally from Auburn-Montgomery, and the Lady Warhawks managed to shoot over 45 percent from the field after shooting under 30 percent in the first 20 minutes.
"It was just fatigue," Askew said. "Their legs were going early, and it's been a long week. I played the starters pretty much the entire second half, just so that we could continue to have some offense going. So, I think most of it was fatigue on their parts for the letdown."
Tuskegee led by 14 at halftime, and managed to open up the half on a 13-4 run over the first six minutes after the Tigerettes came out of the locker room. In spite of the second half rally, Vincent was able to set up her teammates during this early stretch by getting nearly every rebound for the home team during the opening minutes.
Askew said that Vincent has played very sound basketball over the latter stretch of this week.
"Those were two outstanding games," Askew said of Vincent's consecutive double-doubles. "A lot of it stems on rebounding, which I stay on them all the time about that. So, when she's rebounding, that means she's focused and in the game doing well. That's been the thing that I think has been picking her up.....her offensive rebounding."
Next up for Tuskegee is nearly two weeks of rest before going to Milledgeville, GA to play consecutive games against Georgia College & State University and North Carolina - Pembroke. The games are part of GCSU's Stair South Classic, which will be held from Dec. 20-21.
