The Tuskegee University women's basketball team is still seeking their first win of the
Tarsha Askew era after losing their first three games of the 2013 season on the road. The Tigerettes were in Pensacola last week as they dropped their first two games of the season in a 60-50 setback to Delta State, and a 83-57 loss to West Florida, who was the host school in the Comfort Inn Tip-Off Classic. Tuskegee then traveled to Livingston on Wednesday, and dropped a 67-54 game against West Alabama.
In the season opener, Tuskegee led by as many as three early on before Delta State was able to take the lead for good on a layup by Myeisha Stewart at the 12:26 mark of the opening half.
Marie McAbee had a game-high 15 points to go with a team-high of six rebounds, but she could not overcome the double-double from Seneca Walton, as she had 14 points to go with a game-high 12 rebounds. Delta State also managed to shoot better from the field (41.1 percent to 31 percent) and outscored Tuskegee's bench 22-12. The Lady Statesmen also had the edge in points in the paint, by a margin of 32-20.
Tuskegee never had the lead against the Lady Argonauts one night later, as the Tigerettes just shot 31.7 percent from the field.
Kajuanna Rivers was the leading scorer for Tuskegee on this night, as she managed to have a team-high of 15 points. But, Toynetta Johnson was one of five West Florida players to score in double figures, as she had game-highs of 17 points and six assists. McAbee tied for a game-high of eight rebounds with the home team's Raquel Miller. But, Tuskegee was outhustled on the boards by a 50-42 margin. The Lady Argonauts also shot a blistering 67 percent from beyond the arc.
In the most recent loss to West Alabama, the Tigerettes once again had a brief lead until the home team was able to take control at around the 12 minute mark ofthe opening half. Three TU players managed to get into double figures, as
Rachel Brownlee joined McAbee (14 points) and Rivers (team-high of 15 points) with 11 points of her own. McAbee also had a team-high in rebounds, but the team once again struggled to make shots, as Tuskegee shot under 30 percent for the first time this season. The Tigerettes were also 2-for-14 from the three-point line, for a total of just 14.3 percent. Jasmine Hampton (19 points and 10 rebounds) earned a double-double for the home team, and West Alabama's bench outscored Tuskegee's bench by a total of 42-3.
The Tigerettes wrap up the monthof November by traveling to play the University of West Georgia in Carrollton. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. on November 26th. Tuskegee will then play their first three home games in a five-day span, beginning with a rematch against West Alabama on Dec. 3.
