Tuskegee Officially Announces Hire of Linebackers Coach John Carter

TUSKEGEE, Ala. __ Tuskegee football has announced the addition of John Carter as the program's new linebackers coach.

Carter brings a wealth of experience to the Golden Tigers, having served in various coaching roles at the collegiate and high school levels, in addition to a standout playing career at Grambling State University.

He joins the Golden Tiger staff after most recently serving for two years as the linebackers coach and video coordinator at Lane College.

The 2024 season saw continued production from Lane's linebackers, with the defense tallying 644 total tackles, 65 tackles for loss, and 23 sacks. Devon Irving emerged as the standout linebacker, recording 92 total tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, and two sacks.

Tyshun Gaiter remained a key contributor with 79 total tackles and 9.5 tackles for loss, while Robert Brown added 58 total tackles and a team-high 8.5 sacks. Lane's defense forced eight fumbles, recovered seven, and intercepted six passes, highlighting their ability to create turnovers.

In 2023, Lane's defense recorded 633 total tackles, with 68 tackles for loss and 20 sacks. Linebacker Asmar Hasan led the team with 118 total tackles, including 14 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks, proving to be a key leader on the defensive side.

Gaiter followed closely with 67 total tackles, while Jeremiah Brown added 53 tackles and an interception. The unit contributed to six total interceptions and seven forced fumbles, demonstrating strong playmaking ability.

Throughout both seasons, Carter's linebacker corps was a central part of Lane's defensive efforts, consistently producing tackles for loss, forcing turnovers, and disrupting opposing offenses.

Prior to Lane, he was the assistant defensive line coach at Texas Southern University, where his unit helped the Tigers rank #2 in interceptions at the FCS level. While at TSU, Carter also established himself as one of Houston's top defensive line trainers, coaching two high school All-Americans and numerous Division I recruits.

Before his time at Texas Southern, Carter made a significant impact at the high school level. As defensive coordinator and strength & conditioning coach at Franklin Senior High School, his defense led Class 2A in takeaways.

Prior to that, he served as defensive coordinator at Pro-Vision Academy, where he helped guide the program to its first-ever State Championship.

Carter's experience as both a player and coach at the collegiate and high school levels makes him a valuable addition to the Tuskegee coaching staff as the Golden Tigers continue to build a championship-caliber defense.

A native of Houston, Texas, Carter is a graduate of Evan E. Worthing High School, known as the "Pride of Sunnyside." He went on to earn an athletic scholarship to Grambling State University, where he was a key member of the football program.

During his playing career from 2005 to 2009, he helped lead the Tigers to a SWAC Championship and Black College National Championship in 2005.

Carter later earned Defensive MVP honors in 2007 before capturing another SWAC Championship in 2008. He graduated from Grambling with a bachelor's degree in criminal justice in 2010 and later earned a master's degree in sports administration in 2011.
