TUSKEGEE, Ala. – As the 2022-23 college basketball season begins to wind down, the 14th annual Division II HBCU All-America teams powered by BOXTOROW are released, featuring three members of the Golden Tiger men's program.
Tuskegee head coach Benji Taylor has been named HBCU Division II Coach of the Year. In his fourth season as the head coach of the Golden Tigers, he led them to the SIAC Western Division crown. The Golden Tigers' 20-9 record was five games better than last year and earned Tuskegee an at-large berth in the NCAA South regionals.
The starting backcourt of
Gregg Boyd and
Devin Booker were both named Second Team All-Americans by BOXTOROW. Boyd finished second in scoring on the team at 13.3 points per game and assists at 2.5 per game, starting over 20 games for Tuskegee this season. Boyd ranked third in SIAC threes made (64), fourth in free throw percentage (83.3), 13th in scoring, and 14th in assists in the regular season. The guard also scored in double figures in 18 games and dished out three or more assists in 11 games on the year.
Booker led Tuskegee offensively on the year, scoring a team-high 14.4 points, good for ninth in the SIAC, along with grabbing 3.7 rebounds and dishing out 2.7 assists per game, which also leads the team on the regular season. The senior also was stellar defensively from his guard spot, leading the team 1.9 steals which is tied for third in the conference. Booker had 12 double figure scoring games, including three for over 20.
BOXTOROW has administered the All-America teams since 2009. A complete listing of both teams can be found below.
Meanwhile, Coach Taylor and Boyd have both been selected to participate in the HBCU All-Star game, set to take place on Sunday, April 2, in Houston. The event will be hosted on the campus of Texas Southern at the H&PE Arena at 3 p.m. Featuring the top 24 HBCU players from Division I, Division II, and NAIA leagues, the contest will air live on CBS as part of the Final Four weekend.
With a mission to advocate, educate, expose, mentor and invest in HBCU students, student-athletes and coaches across the country, the event aims to showcase the "Best in Black College Basketball."
