Football Preview: Tuskegee Set to Face Alabama State in Final Game and Turkey Day Classic

MONTGOMERY, Ala. __ Tuskegee football (7-3, 6-2 SIAC) will close out their 2023 season on Thanksgiving Day, meeting long-time rival Alabama State (6-4, 5-3 SWAC) for the Turkey Day Classic. The meeting is the 104th all-time between the two programs.

GAME NOTES

  • Tuskegee (7-3, 6-2 SIAC) will face off against Alabama State (6-3, 5-2 SWAC) for the Turkey Day Classic on Thursday, Nov. 23, at 2 p.m., inside of ASU Stadium for the final regular season game of 2023.
  • Fans can watch live on ESPN+, with Butch Alsandor (play-by-play) and Jorge Vargas (analyst), as well as listen live on the Black College Sports Network with Frank Lee (play-by-play) and Ken Woodard and Kindric Hooks (analysts).
  • The Golden Tigers have dominated the series with Alabama State historically, leading 62-38-3. The series has been back-and-forth of late, as the programs have split the last ten meetings, while Tuskegee holds a 14-11 edge in the last 25 meetings against the Hornets. The first game played between the two teams was in 1901, with Tuskegee winning, 37-0. Alabama State took the last matchup, earning a Turkey Day Classic win in 2021 with a 43-9 result in Montgomery.
  • Tuskegee and Alabama State will be meeting for the 104th time for the second-most played series in school history, trailing only Morehouse (113), while being ahead of Clark Atlanta (83), Miles (66) and Morris Brown (54) to round out the five longest in TU history.
LAST MEETING
  • Tuskegee lost the 2021 meeting between programs, falling 43-9 inside of ASU Stadium, meeting of Thanksgiving in Montgomery for the first time since 2012.
  • ASU outrushed Tuskegee 188-68, while also outgaining the Golden Tigers through the air 223-144. The Hornets gained 22 first downs to just nine from Tuskegee, while the total yardage gained was separated by nearly 200 yards with Alabama State leading 411-212.
  • Bryson Williams led the team offensively, going 5-for-19 through the air for 110 yards and a 43-yard touchdown, while Terry Bryant added 61 yards on the ground on nine carries, including a long of 44.
  • Carl Matthews recorded 13 total tackles on the day (nine solos), followed by Woodly Appolon and Freddrick Austin with nine tackles each, and Wesley Appolon with eight tackles in the loss.
