Football Schedule Preview: Week 5 – Clark Atlanta

The Golden Tigers will battle a familiar face in a road matchup against Clark Atlanta

TUSKEGEE – For the first Saturday in October, the Tuskegee Golden Tigers will face off against conference foe Clark Atlanta on the road on October 1.

Tuskegee and Clark Atlanta will meet for the 82nd time in series history, dating back to the first meeting between the two programs in 1902. The two programs met during the 2021 season, with Tuskegee taking a 21-0 win over the Panthers inside of Abbott Memorial Stadium.

The Golden Tigers lead the all-time series 63-16-2, and currently hold their longest streak of the series with 11 games. Clark Atlanta holds two streaks of three wins each with the last being from 1961-63.

The conference matchup at the start of October will also pit Tuskegee against a familiar face for the first time in new Clark Atlanta Head Coach Willie Slater.

Slater, who won seven SIAC championships as a head coach at Tuskegee University, takes over for Tim Bowens, who served as CAU's coach for the past three years.

Slater spent the past 16 years at Tuskegee where his teams were 123-47, winning seven SIAC titles in 2006-09, 2012, 2014, and 2017. The 2007 squad was named HBCU national champions with a 12-0 record.

His teams had nine wins in eight of his first ten seasons and had winning seasons in nine of those ten years. Slater has won more SIAC championships than anyone in the SIAC, earning him the title of SIAC Coach of the Year five times along with coaching 48 total All-SIAC players during his tenure.

The game in Atlanta will be the fourth game away from home that includes just one home game for the Golden Tigers in the first six weeks of the season, as they open the season with a neutral site game in Montgomery against Fort Valley State, followed by road trips to Hampton and West Alabama, before hosting Allen on September 24.
