Tuskegee falls to Savannah State in SIAC quarterfinal round

ROCK HILL, S.C. I Tuskegee men's basketball fell to Savannah State 61-50 on Thursday night in the quarterfinal round of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Tournament inside the Rock Hill Sport & Event Center.
 
After a quick 4-0 lead to start the game for the Tuskegee (15-13, 11-7 SIAC), Savannah State used their fast-paced play to go on a 11-4 run into the under 16 media timeout and found themselves up 15-8 with just over 10 to play in the half.
 
Junior Steve Dulley (Kansas City, Mo.) scored his first basket with a drive plus a foul at the 9:50 mark, sparking an 8-5 run along with a long-range jumper to reduce the deficit to four at 20-16.
 
Savannah State gained their first double-digit lead minutes later at 30-20 and held Tuskegee to just five more points in the half, heading into the locker room at 36-25. The Golden Tigers shot 41.7 (10-for-24) percent from the floor in the half and 28.6 (2-for-7) percent from deep, while their opponent shot 52 (13-for-25) percent from the field and 55.6 (5-for-9) percent from three.
 
First Team All-SIAC guard Devin Booker (Chicago, Ill.) came out of the break with the first six points for the Golden Tigers on two old fashioned three-point plays, helping pull within five at 38-33 after a pair of free throws from Dulley with just over 16 minutes remaining.
 
Minutes later, Tuskegee climbed within a point after a free throw from Mike Evans (Atlanta, Ga.), and tied the game at 41-41 on their next possession after a score inside from Reco Hallmon (Atlanta, Ga.) at the 12:37 mark.
 
After another break in action, Savannah State separated themselves again, going up 52-43 after a score before a pair of free throws by Dulley brought the Golden Tigers within five at 54-49 with 2:38 to play, however they could not complete the comeback.
 
Booker led Tuskegee on the night with 14 points and four rebounds, followed by Dulley who added 12 points, four rebounds and two steals on the night.
 
Marcus Scott led three double figure scorers for Savannah State with 18 points, followed by Avery Joyner and Trey Deloach with 14 and 11 points respectively.
