Women’s Basketball comes away with home win over Edward Waters

TUSKEGEE, Ala. – Tuskegee (9-2, 6-0 SIAC) took a convincing 71-30 win over Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) foe Edward Waters inside of the Daniel "Chappie" James Center on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Tigers jumped out to an early 6-1 lead halfway through the opening quarter, before a four-point run to make the game 6-5 heading into the media timeout.
 
With just over two minutes to play in the quarter, Amariah Stanard (Stone Mountain, Ga.) scored on consecutive possessions including a layup and foul to put Tuskegee up 11-5, however Edward Waters closed the quarter strong, reducing the lead to 13-10.
 
Tuskegee extended their lead to six, at 17-11, nearly a minute into the second and later led 22-13 after a three from Arielle McElroy (Bolingbrook, Ill.). The Golden Tigers gained a double-digit lead for the first time at the 6:04 mark, after Nadia Thorman-Mckey (Evanston, Ill.) sank a pair of free throws to go up 24-13 and maintained the momentum for the remainder of the half as they outscored Edward Waters 23-6 in the quarter.
 
After leading 36-16 at the half, Tuskegee continued their strong play, as Ashiala Jackson (Merrillville, Ind.) led the way with eight points and three steals in the third quarter. The Golden Tigers held Edward. Waters to just six points again in the quarter and forced 12 turnovers on the way to a 56-22 lead heading into the fourth.
 
Jackson added five more points in the final quarter, along with four from Sumaiyah Abdur-Rahim (Grand Prairie, Texas) as part of 15 total to close out the contest. The Golden Tigers led by as much as 42 in the fourth and forced eight turnovers in the frame in the win.

JuToreyia Willis (Chattanooga, Tenn.) led Tuskegee on the day with yet another all-around game, finishing with 16 points, seven rebounds, five steals, and four assists. Jackson finished with another double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds, followed by Abdur-Rahim with ten points and a season-high six steals in the win.
 
Tuskegee was favored in all the key points of emphasis, outscoring Edward Waters in points off turnovers (30-8), points in the paint (28-18), second chance points (17-6), fast break points (4-8), and bench points (16-11).

The Golden Tigers will finish out 2022 with a road contest and final non-conference game against Clayton State, on Monday, December 19, in Morrow, Ga. with tip-off scheduled for 12:30 p.m. ET.
