TUSKEGEE, Ala. – Tuskegee men's basketball (8-4, 3-2 SIAC) had a strong showing on Thursday night, defeating Savannah State, 61-41, in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) play inside the Daniel "Chappie" James Center.
The Golden Tigers started the game with a 6-0 lead heading into the first media timeout, with scores from
Martez Jones (Tuskegee, Ala.),
Deveraux Davis (Minneapolis, Minn.), and
Steve Dulley (Kansas City, Mo.), before Savannah State got on the board with a free throw at the 14:37 mark.
Tuskegee controlled the momentum for the next few minutes, stretching their lead to nine points with just over nine minutes to play in the half, followed by taking a double-digit lead for the first time at 17-7 after a pair of free throws from Jones with 4:37 remaining.
Coming out of the last media break of the half up 19-9, the Golden Tigers went on another run late, outscoring Savannah State 11-7 through the remainder of the half to lead 30-16 going into the locker room.
Tuskegee came out in the second half continuing their strong play, as they gained a 20-point lead at the 18:24 mark after a paint score from
Kusame Draper (Conyers, Ga.). Following the first media timeout of the half, the Golden Tigers continued to extend their lead, going up 25 with just over 14 minutes to play and 49-19 lead with 11:16 to play.
The Golden Tigers maintained their momentum for the remainder of the game, holding Savannah State to just 41 total points in the matchup for the win.
Davis led the Golden Tigers in scoring on the night with 12 points along with six rebounds, two steals and two blocks, while
Gregg Boyd (Seat Pleasant, Md.) added 11 points in the win. Meanwhile, Draper finished with eight points and ten rebounds.
Tuskegee won the battle of points in the paint (34-18), bench points (28-26), second chance points (8-7) and points off turnovers (17-13). They also finished with shooting splits of 45.8 (22-for-48) percent from the field, 23.5 (4-for-17) percent from deep and 61.9 (13-for-21) percent from the free throw line.
