Golden Tigers suffer first loss of season to West Florida in midweek nonconference action

PENSACOLA, Fla. – Tuskegee men's basketball (5-1, 0-0 SIAC) dropped a midweek road contest on Tuesday against West Florida by the score of 63-52, resulting in their first loss on the year.
 
After taking the first lead of the game just over two minutes in on a three from Gregg Boyd (Seat Pleasant, Md.), the Golden Tigers found themselves trailing for most of the opening half, falling 12-9 at the 12-minute mark and double digits at 27-17 with five remaining in the half.

The Golden Tigers began to claw back in the second half, getting within 12 points with 14 minutes to play and back within single digits at 44-36 with 9:37 to play. Reco Hallmon (Atlanta, Ga.) made the game 47-42 with a jumper with just over seven in the game, followed later by a pair of threes from Boyd to take a 48-47 lead, their first since start of the game.
 
With just under four minutes to go, West Florida retook the lead at 50-48 with a three and closed out the game in control for the win.
 
Boyd led the way offensively with 14 points, including going 4-for-8 from long range to go with three assists and two rebounds. Martez Jones (Tuskegee, Ala.) was the only other double figure scorer for Tuskegee, finishing with 14 points and five rebounds.

West Florida led in points off turnovers 21-8, however Tuskegee led the way in bench points (15-14), fast break points (7-6), and points in the paint (22-18). Meanwhile, the Golden Tigers finished the game with shooting splits of 38 (19-for-50) percent from the field, 33.3 (7-for-21) percent from the free throw line, and 77.8 (7-for-9) percent from deep in the loss.

Up Next
The Golden Tigers will host Fort Valley State on Saturday afternoon inside of Daniel "Chappie" James Arena. The doubleheader is set to tip-off at 1 p.m., followed by the men at 3 p.m.
