How It Happened
1st Quarter
- Things started off well for the Golden Tigers as Northern Illinois transfer Woodly Appolon jarred the ball loose from Marlon Fleming at the FVSU 35-yard line and Kevin Scott jumped on the fumble to set up excellent field position for TU's opening drive.
- Starting quarterback Bryson Williams found Jordan Ogletree and Keynon Webb for 12 yards apiece plus a roughing the passer call setup Tuskegee with first-and-goal from the four. Three straight one yard runs later, TU faced fourth down from the one, but a quarterback sneak was stuffed for a turnover on downs.
- The two sides would exchange three-and-outs before FVSU drove 55 yards over the final 4:50 of the quarter as the teams ended the opening frame scoreless.
2nd Quarter
- The first play of the second saw Wildcats kicker Andre Labat attempt a 40-yarder which ultimately came up well short.
- Tuskegee's ensuing possession was derailed three penalties and a fumble as they were forced to punt once again.
- The game's first turnovers came swiftly for both sides soon thereafter as Marquez Delafield leapt up to make the interception on the first play for FVSU but the Golden Tigers gave it right back three plays later, coughing up the rock to give Fort Valley the ball on TU's side of the 50.
- Fort Valley State converted that turnover into the first points of the ballgame, as Labat redeemed himself with a 42-yard boot to give the Wildcats the lead at the 7:36 mark. (3-0, Fort Valley State).
- Back-to-back three-and-outs ensued once again before the turnover bug bit again, as Christian Maddox picked off Bryson Williams to give Valley an opportunity to put three more points on the board before intermission. (6-0, Fort Valley State).
3rd Quarter
- The opening drive of the third quarter looked promising for TU as Williams hooked up with Webb for a 21-yard pass to immediately put the Golden Tigers in FVSU territory.
- Disaster on the ground would strike again for Tuskegee as the ball hit the turf and was subsequently scooped up by the blue and gold.
- Fort Valley State cashed in six plays and 37 yards later as Tyrell Jackson hit Jhi'Marre Brown for a touchdown from six yards out. (13-0, Fort Valley State)
- Tuskegee fumbled again on the next drive which led to another FVSU touchdown pass, this time to Shemar Bridges, to make it a three-score contest. (20-0, Fort Valley State).
- The next possession went the same as the previous two as TU fumbled for the third consecutive drive as Fort Valley immediately turned into six, taking it 60 yards the other way to blow the game open. (27-0, Fort Valley State).
- A quarterback change ensued for Tuskegee with Louis Williams entering the lineup with 1:13 left in the third, picking up a first down with his legs to end the period.
4th Quarter
- The swarming FVSU defense ended the drive on the back of consecutive sacks to force a punt.
- The Wildcats salted the clock away from there, consuming just over ten minutes and 73 yard over 18 plays to cap off the scoring with a field goal. (30-0, Fort Valley State).
Tuskegee Top Performers
- The Appolon twins (Wesly and Woodly) finished with a combined 18 tackles between the two as Wesly led all tacklers with 11 as well as a tackle for loss while Woodly forced a fumble with seven tackles of his own.
- Devarens Valcin shone brightly on special teams for the Golden Tigers, piling up 120 all-purpose yards (97 kickoff yards, 23 punt yards), two yards shy of his career-high on kick returns.
- Fort Scott Community College transfer Marquez Delafield had a solid debut, snatching one out of the air for his first interception and swatting away two passes.
- Bryson Williams made his first career start under center, setting personal bests in both passing yards (99) and completions (7) while connecting on 63.6% of his throws.
- Steven Hodges led TU receivers with 46 yards on just two catches and Keynon Webb posted 37 yards on three receptions in his collegiate debut.
Notes
- Fort Valley State snapped a seven-game losing streak in the series, having not defeated the Golden Tigers since 2010 before the victory.
- It was the first time Tuskegee had been held under 100 passing yards since November 11, 2017 when Fort Valley State held them to 55.
- TU fumbled seven times, losing four of those.
