MONTGOMERY, Ala. | The Tuskegee University baseball team (5-5) split with Paine College (5-3) in non-conference action Saturday afternoon at Paterson Field in Montgomery.
Game 1
The Tuskegee University baseball scored a pair of early runs and put away Paine College in the first game 8-3 in a double header Saturday at Paterson Field in SIAC play.
Paine College gave up a run in the bottom of the first from a wild pitch. The Golden Tigers managed to pick another run in the bottom of the second inning.
Paine managed to get on the board in the top of the third inning after a RBI double by Paine College's David New made the score 2-1.
Following the runs scored in the third inning the Golden Tigers wouldn't score until the sixth inning. The Golden Tigers extended their lead when Tayari Albright scored on a wild pitch, putting Caleb Cobb in scoring position as he advanced to third.
The lead was increased to 6-1 when Dominic Johnson singled to left field and drew in two runners Jameson Eichelberger and Richard Smith.
The Golden Tigers advanced Johnson home after Albright was hit by a pitch with bases loaded, before Cobb drove a ball deep to the right field wall to bring Joshua Lewis home. Tuskegee finished the 6th inning taking a 8-1 lead.
Paine added a pair of runs in the seventh to trim the lead to 8-3, before the Golden Tigers turned the game over to Savontae Williams.
Cobb and Smith each collected a pair of hits for Tuskegee. Johnson and Eichelberger combined for 4 RBIs while Cobb and Albright finished with solo RBIs.
Williams (3-1) earned the win, allowing just one run off of three hits, recording six strikeouts, pitching four innings. Devon Shaw went two innings, not allowing a single run off of two hits. He also recorded three strikeouts.
Game 2
The Golden Tigers put two runs on the board in the bottom of the first inning from a single by Caleb Cobb which allowed Joshua Lewis and Dominic Johnson to make it 2-1.
Tuskegee gave up a run in the first inning, four in the third, one in the sixth, three in the seventh.
Nytorious Cooler took the loss on the mound, dropping his record to 1-2 on the season.
Tuskegee split their scoring between three innings, the first, and fifth and sixth – scoring two runs in the first and the sixth with one in the fifth. The Lions exploded with four runs in the top of the third.
They added to their lead with a run in the top of the sixth, and three runs in the top of the seventh to beat the Golden Tigers in game two and split the series.
The Golden Tigers return to action Friday, February 28th against Talladega College in Talladega, AL. First pitch is scheduled for 1 pm followed by a doubleheader on Saturday February 29th.
