The Tuskegee University baseball team split a pair of games Saturday afternoon at Paterson Field in Montgomery, Ala. which was the start of a four-game series. Spring Hill College claimed game one 11-2 with the Golden Tigers taking the evening contest 6-5.
In game one, SHC's productivity on offense proved to be the difference. A three-run homer in the first inning but TU in a 3-0 hole early on and added two more runs, creating a 5-0 deficit after two. The Golden Tigers would bring the game to within three runs when
Ronald McGhee doubled to left center, driving in
Tayari Albright. Moments later, McGhee ended up scoring on a wild pitch to make the score 5-2.
TU would not get any closer as the Badgers notched an additional six runs to round out the scoring.
Dominic Johnson was 2-of-4 at the plate. Mcghee,
Joshua Lewis and
Elgin Woodside each earned one hit each.
Skegee flipped the script in game two and started the contest the exact opposite of game one. The Golden Tigers scored five of their six runs in the first two innings. It all started with a Woodside single that score D. Johnson. An
Emory Willis double to left field drove in three runs ( McGhee, Hollins and Woodside), give TU a commanding 4-0 after the first inning. One inning later, Johnson added another run on a throwing error, extedning the team's lead to 5-0.
In the third inning, TU would have its biggest lead (6-0) after T. Albright grounded out to second base unassisted, RBI; E. Willis advanced to third; R. McGhee scored.
The Badgers would rally with a five-run fourth inning, but would not get any closer.
Taylor Merriweather picked up the win for the Golden Tigers. His first of the season.
Both teams will close out the series with a double header that starts at 1 p.m.
