The General Daniel "Chappie" James Center, home to men's and women's basketball since 1987 has a new look. Over the holiday break, the gymnasium floor was renovated just in time for the long stretch of conference (SIAC) games over the next two months.
Both teams will host Benedict College in a doubleheader that starts at 1 p.m. The game can been seen live on the
Tuskegee Digital Network.
The process involved the floor getting sanded down and removing the top surface of a wooden area with abrasive materials and machinery. The most noticeable change is the newly designed stained color that goes around the perimeter on each end of the floor and the water base finish that gives the surface a shiny gloss. The final stage was applying two coats of polyurethane on the floor, which completed the job
The Tuskegee basketball team played its first game in the James Center Arena on November 20, 1987. Dr. Charles Thompson's Golden Tigers defeated Florida Memorial College of Miami, Florida, 110-100. The first game played in the Center was between Clark Atlanta University and Bowie State University on the same date, won by Clark Atlanta.
The James Center Arena is the third home for the Tuskegee Basketball Golden Tigers and Tigerettes. Huntington Hall served as the home court from 1908-1931 and Logan Hall from January 9, 1931 until 1987.
Much of the project was accomplished because of the department's partnership with
