The Tuskegee University baseball team defeated Claflin 10-3 on day one of the 2018 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Baseball Tournament Thursday evening in Albany (Ga.) on the campus of Albany State University. The win gave the Golden Tigers back to back opening day victories at the league's annual tournament.
The biggest story of the day was the play of senior pitcher,
Trey Nelson who picked on the win for TU. He pitched all nine innings allowing only three runs on seven hits while striking out five batters. Nelson opened last year's conference tournament with a 4-2 win over Benedict.
TU led 4-0 through seven innings and then the gates flooded in the eighth inning.
Elgin Woodside started the run with a single up the middle, scoring
Dominic Johnson and Tyari Albright.
Matthew Reed doubled down the right field line driving in Woodside,
Gabriel Selochan and
Ryan Green to make the score 8-0 after eight.
Claflin finished things off with a three-run ninth inning rounding out the score at 10-3.
D. Johnson finished with a solid day at the plate going 3-of-5 to go along with three RBI. Green, Reed and Woodside also finished with multiple hits, earning two each.
The Golden Tigers will now face Miles College Friday morning at 10:00 a.m. from the Albany State West Campus Stadium. Live coverage can be heard on the
Tuskegee Digital Network.
