Tuskegee held a 17 point lead in the third quarter over Miles College before allowing the Golden Bears to rally in the second half to a 31-27 win over the Golden Tigers Saturday afternoon in Fairfield, Ala. The loss cost TU a shot at hosting the 2018 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference SIAC Football Championship next week, ending their season at 5-5 overall and 3-3 in the conference.
After Miles returned a punt back for a touchdown in the opening quarter, the Golden Tigers answered the call with an eight yard touchdown pass from Ahmad Deramus to
Peyton Ramzy early in the second quarter. A drive that only took two plays and 35 yards. The Deramus to Ramzy connection would strike again just before halftime, this time on a nine yard TD catch that made the score 14-7.
A quick defensive stop just before the break gave TU the ball back and
Huskic Arnes capitalized from it when he split the upright with a 45 yard field goal that increased Skegee's lead, 17-7 at halftime.
The Golden Tigers opened the third quarter with a potent nine-play 60 yard drive occupying 4:24 seconds that was capped off with a one-yard touchdown run by Deramus. A score that gave TU its biggest lead of the game at 24-7. With 9:08 left to play in the third quarter, Malik Campbell hit Daniel Smith with a 59-yard TD pass that reduced their deficit to 24-14. On the ensuing possession, Mitchell Smiley recovered a fumble, returned it for 21 yards for touchdown and all of a sudden, TU only found themselves leading 24-21. The Golden Tigers struggled late in the third quarter to manufacture points and gain first downs, which eventually led to The Golden Bears tying the game at 24-24 following a 37-yard field goal with 13:53 left to play in the game.
After a Miles turnover in its own territory, Arnes put the Golden Tigers back up with a 37 yard field goal, making the score 27-24. The lead would not last. the Golden Bears went on to drive the ball down the field on nine plays taking up 65 yards, capped off with a Tyree 27 yard pass to Smith, putting them up for good. The Golden Tigers came up empty on its final possession ending its season with five losses. The most since they were defeated six times in 2011 and second most during the
Willie Slater tenure.
Kenny Gant was the biggest story of the day offensively for TU as he carried the ball 25 times for 162 yard. Deramus completed 11-of-28 passes for 160 yards, two passing touchdown and one rushing score.
Javarrius Cheatham hauled in three passes for 52 yards to leading the receiving corps while defensively TU was paced back
Kalil Gray and Devonta Ramsuer with finished with nine and seven tackles respectively.
Terance Leatherwood had the team's only sack and four stops of his own.
