Twelve-year NFL veteran Drayton Florence and all-time passing leader, Maurice Heard will return to the campus of Tuskegee University this weekend when the Golden Tigers take on Kentucky State at 1 p.m. Both TU standouts will serve as honorary captains during the game's coin toss, just moments before the start of the 94th Annual Homecoming Game.
Florence, a 2003 second round NFL draft pick was a member of the 2001 and 2002 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Football Championship teams. He left TU and went on to play 12 seasons with five different teams, racking up 486 tackles and 20 interceptions. As a Golden Tiger, he registered a school-record three returns for touchdowns on interceptions. During his senior year, he was named first-team Division II All-America by the Associated Press and American Coaches Association. The Ocala, Fla. was an All-American selection at TU and is currently the highest drafted player ever from the university and is a member of the school's Hall of Fame.
Heard, another TU Hall of Famer re-wrote the passing record book for the Golden Tigers. He holds records for most passing yards in a game with 539 against Alabama A&M?in 1990, touchdown passes in a game with five against Alabama A&M?in 1990, most touchdown passes in a season with 34 in 1990, most touchdown passes in a career with 87 from 1988-91 and most career passing yards with 8,434. The Tuskegee native is currently the head coach at Booker T. Washington High School in Tuskegee (Ala.) and is known for being the only coach to lead the school into the high school playoffs since it opened in 1992. He was a finalist for the Harlon Hill Award which goes to the outstanding player in NCAA Division II?football.
Kickoff against KSU is set for 1 p.m. this Saturday from Cleve Abbott Memorial Stadium.
