In a first half that featured a combined six turnovers, Tuskegee clawed out a 17-6 victory at Fort Valley State Saturday evening from Fort Valley (Ga.) inside Wildcat Stadium. The win improved TU to 4-3 overall record and 2-1 in the conference
FVSU got on the board first with 3:14 left to play in the first quarter when Abisai Gutierrez kicked a 33-yard field goal to put the Wildcats ahead 3-0. On TU's first possession of the second quarter
Kendall Calvin scored his first touchdown of the season after hauling in a four-yard pass from Ahmad Deramus. After a
Huskic Arnes PAT, The Golden Tigers took a 7-3 lead, which is how the score remained at halftime.
Last season's Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship (SIAC) game also featured a 7-3 halftime score in favor of Skegee.
TU opened the second half with six play 70-yard drive that occupied 2:31 seconds when Deramus threw his second touchdown of the game on an 11-yard completion to
Justice Owens. The PAT from Arnes made the score 14-3.
Arnes would round out the scoring on the day when his 31-yard field goal attempt split the upright with 4:34 left to play in the third quarter. From that point and beyond, TU's defense finish off the Wildcats holding them to 75 yards rushing in the game and a total of only 40 yards in the fourth quarter.
Kalil Gray led the Golden Tigers with nine tackles to go along with an interception and a forced fumble. Rickey Norris added eight stops while Shaun Mcgee chipped in five tackles.
Rorrick Steward and
Terance Leatherwood both finished the evening with four tackles and a forced fumble each. Leatherwood and Tank Ramsuer earned one sack apiece.
Kenny Gant led Skegee's rushing attack with 75 yards on 16 carries. Running Back
Justice Owens finished with a game-high 81 receiving yards, hauling in five catches and a touchdown.
Peyton Ramzy caught four balls for 66 yards.
Tuskegee now shifts attention to its 94th Annual Homecoming game that features Kentucky State. Kickoff with the Thorobreds is set for 1 p.m. at Cleve Abbott Memorial Stadium.
