Tuskegee comes up short in game two, falls in doubleheader to Spring Hill

Sharde Thomas picks up six hits in DH, Jamaica Williams and Kaylin Finch homer

TUSKEGEE, Ala. | After being held down for most of the day, the Tuskegee University softball team exploded for four runs in the seventh inning of game two; however, Spring Hill answered with a pair in the top of the eighth to complete the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon.

Spring Hill (26-12, 14-0 SIAC) was able to take game one 14-1, before coming back to win game two 6-4 at the Tuskegee University softball field before a capacity crowd.

After being held in check for most of the day by Caroline Sagrera (game one) and Katelyn Wilson (game two), the Lady Golden Tigers offense erupted in the bottom of the seventh inning of game two trailing by four runs.

Sharde Thomas, the conference's leading hitter, led off the inning with a double to right center field, and advanced to third on a Cari Driver single to right. After a pop up by Chante Warner, freshman Kaylin Finch stepped to the plate. After having two balls narrowly miss being homeruns by fading foul on the day, Finch took a two-strike pitch and hammered it over the left centerfield wall for a three-run homerun and trimmed the deficit to 4-3. The homerun tied Jamaica Williams for the team lead, her third of the season.

Just two batters later, Williams took the team lead back by hammering a 3-0 pitch over the centerfield wall to tie the game at 4-all and send it to extra innings. In the extra frame, Spring Hill was able to push two runs across for the win.

Tuskegee had their chances in the second game, including an opportunity in the sixth to get on the board. After a two-out walks to Roneshia Rudolph and Jasmine Howard loaded the bases, Tuskegee coach Edward Colvin called on senior Karisa Foye to pinch-hit. After battling in the at-bat, Wilson was able to get Foye on a rise ball to end the inning and the threat.

Spring Hill scored one run in each of the third, fifth, sixth and seventh innings off Tuskegee starter Kaylin Finch (4-8), who worked a complete game allowing six runs (four earned) and scattering 10 hits.

Thomas finished the second game 3-for-5, and the day 6-for-8 with a pair of runs scored. Driver finished game two with a pair of hits to lead the 10-hit attack for Tuskegee.

In the opener, Spring Hill was able to get to Foye (1-5) early with four runs in the first and three more in the third. The senior allowed 10 runs (eight earned) off of eight hits with one strikeout.

Thomas led the Lady Golden Tigers with three of the team's six hits in the loss.

Tuskegee and Spring Hill will close out the series Monday morning at 10 am on the campus of Tuskegee University, in a series that was pushed back a day due to the weather.
