TUSKEGEE, Ala. | The Tuskegee University women's basketball team had their chances, but missed a three-pointer at the buzzer as they fell 62-59 to Stillman College in a key Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest Saturday afternoon.
After leading for much of the game, the Tigerettes fell behind 61-54 late in the second half before a three-pointer from
Kierra Ward hit the top of the backboard and found its way in with 1:08 to play. The deficit was trimmed to two at 61-59 with 22 seconds remaining on a
Cheyanne Williams lay-up forcing a flurry of activity in the final seconds.
After a Tuskegee (5-19, 4-11 SIAC) timeout, the crowd wanted a backcourt violation called on Stillman but a foul was called prior to the violation. Joclyn Ramos hit the front end of a two-shot foul, with Williams grabbing the rebound and getting the ball up the floor quickly.
As the clock was expiring, a three-pointer by
Rachel Brownlee hit off the rim to give Stillman (8-15, 4-11 SIAC).
Brownlee led Tuskegee with 22 points, the 21st consecutive game she has scored in double figures this season and the 23rd time in 24 games.
Aryana Jackson added 13 points, while
Halle Bentley grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds in her final home game.
The Tigerettes shot 40.7 (24-of-59) percent from the floor and 21.7 (5-of-23) percent from beyond the arc. They also shot 54.5 (6-of-11) percent from the free throw line, while winning the rebounding battle 44-31.
Meanwhile, Schenia Battle scored a game-high 23 points to lead Stillman, while Ramos added 15 points and four steals.
The Lady Tigers shot just 35.6 (21-of-59) percent from the floor and 30.8 (8-of-26) percent from beyond the arc. They also shot 54.5 (12-of-22) percent from the free throw line and turned the ball over 18 times.
Tuskegee returns to action Monday night on the road, facing Miles College at Bill Harris Arena. Tip is set for 5:30 pm.
