Nova Southeastern uses big hits to down Tuskegee

Golden Tigers held to one hit in game one loss

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. | Nova Southeastern University used three homeruns and rode the arm of Alex Mateo to defeat Tuskegee University 20-0 in non-conference action Friday night at the NSU Baseball Complex.
 
Nova Southeastern (4-5), ranked 14th in the NCAA Division II Collegiate Baseball preseason poll two weeks ago, scored five runs in the first inning to put the game out of reach. They scored another five in the third and four more in the fourth to put the game away.
 
Mateo (1-1) got the win for the Sharks, working seven innings and allowing just one hit and striking out 10. Meanwhile, Trey Nelson (0-2) suffered the loss for the Tuskegee as he was roughed up for 12 runs (11 earned) off of 12 hits in 2.2 innings of work.
 
Tuskegee (2-6) got their only hit when Gemini Jackson broke up the Mateo no-hitter in the seventh inning with a two-out single. The Golden Tigers also drew three walks on the night, breaking up the perfect game in the fifth inning.
 
The Sharks connected on nine extra-base hits, including three homeruns on the night to win game one of the three-game series. Brandon Gomez led Nova Southeastern at the plate with three hits (3-for-4) with three runs batted in and a homerun. Daniel Zardon (3-for-4 with two RBI and homerun), Sebastian Diaz (3-for-5 with three RBI and two doubles) and Michael Hernandez (3-for-4 with five RBI, a double and homerun) each picked up three hits in the game for the Sharks
 
The two teams will meet again tomorrow afternoon beginning at 1 pm (est) with a doubleheader. Daniel Croom (1-0) will get the ball in game two of the series, while Joseph Mauldin (1-1) will take the mound in the final game of the series.
