Tuskegee falls in final seconds to Miles

Joshua Culver records a double-double in loss

TUSKEGEE, Ala. | The Tuskegee University men's basketball team fell in the final seconds to Miles College, 76-71, in a key Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Chappie James Arena Monday night.
 
Joshua Culver led Tuskegee (10-9, 6-6 SIAC) with 18 points and 10 rebounds, his first career double-double while connecting on 9-of-10 from the floor. Elijah McMillan and James Eads added 14 in the loss, while Kevin May dished out six assists.
 
Tuskegee shot 41.9 (26-62) percent from the floor and just 29.6 (8-of-27) percent from beyond the arc. They also shot 68.8 (11-of-16) percent from the free throw line, while winning the rebounding battle 41-37.
 
Miles (13-9, 11-2 SIAC) was led by Joshua Samuels with a career-high 23 points on 6-of-13 shooting from the floor and 7-of-8 from the free throw line. Former Golden Tiger Shaquille Cook added 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Maiscei Grier and Willie Gray added 10 in the victory for the Golden Bears.
 
Miles shot 37.7 (20-of-53) percent from the floor, and 50 (6-of-12) percent from beyond the arc. They also connected on 76.9 (30-of-39) percent from the free throw line on the night.
 
Tuskegee held the lead for most of the second half following a three-pointer from Camden Foster with 12 minutes to play. They pushed that lead to as many as eight on a James Eads' layup with 7:32 to play in the contest, grabbing a 63-57 lead.
 
Miles was able to fight back closing the gap and tying the game at 65-all with 5:32 to play in the game. The Golden Bears grabbed a 66-65 lead with 4:48 to play, before extending it to three at 68-65 with 4:10 to play in the game.
 
Tuskegee fought back and took the lead when Culver hit a layup with 2:15 to play, grabbing a 69-68 lead. The two teams battled over the final 99 seconds following the game being tied at 70-all.
 
The Golden Tigers grabbed a 71-70 lead on a free throw by May, before Miles took the lead for good at 72-71 with a layup from Eric Halliwell with just 1:20 remaining. Miles put the game away with a lay-up and a pair of free throws down the stretch.
 
Tuskegee will return to action Saturday on the road in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play, facing Stillman at Birthright Gymnasium on homecoming. Tip is scheduled for 3 pm (cst).
