TUSKEGEE, Ala. | Rachel Brownlee led four players in double figures for Tuskegee University as the Tigerettes won their final exhibition contest this fall, 70-67 over LaGrange College at Chappie James Arena Sunday afternoon.
Brownlee extended her consecutive game streak in double figures as she reached 25 consecutive games with her 7-of-16 performance from the floor. The senior finished the night with 20 points and eight rebounds, while added a pair of assists and three steals. She led a balanced attack Sunday afternoon with freshman
Taylor Miller scoring in double figures for the second consecutive game with 15, while adding a pair of assists and a blocked shot.
Cheyanne Williams added 11 points and eight rebounds, while
Jade Wilson hit double figures with 10 points and five rebounds in the win. Freshman point guard
Jalynn Estrada recorded eight assists, one better than her mark against UAB in her first collegiate game earlier this week.
The Tigerettes shot 39.7 (25-of-63) percent from floor and 38.9 (7-of-18) percent from beyond the arc. They also shot 65 (13-of-20) percent from the free throw line, while winning the rebounding battle 44-38 over LaGrange.
Tuskegee led by as many as 19 points in the second half, grabbing a 53-34 lead with 4:22 remaining in the third quarter before LaGrange cut into the lead over the next 14 minutes. They eventually trimmed the lead to single digits and to four with 6:22 to play in the contest (58-54). From there, the two teams traded baskets until Tuskegee went up 62-55 on an
Asha Stegall jumper with 5:02 remaining in the contest. They pushed the lead to 64-55 with 4:07 remaining when Williams connected on a lay-up.
The lead grew to as many as 10 in the final three minutes when Wilson hit a running lay-up and went to 11 on a free throw by
Rachel Brownlee with 2:46 to play, but then LaGrange trimmed into the Tuskegee lead with 2:34 to play. The deficit was down to five with 1:48 to play, and then down to three with at 70-67 in the final seconds. Tuskegee had a chance to close the contest out, but a turnover with 14 seconds left led to a flurry of activity with LaGrange missing an open three-pointer and a lay-up before the ball fell harmlessly to the court as the clock expired.
LaGrange was led by Lauren Johnson with 18 points, while Kelsey Walthall added 10 in the loss.
Tuskegee opens the 2016-17 campaign against the University of North Alabama Friday night inside Chappie James Arena with tip set for 5:30 pm. The game is part of the Regional Challenge that will take place Friday and Saturday on the Tuskegee campus.
