MOBILE, Ala.| The Tuskegee University volleyball team fell to Spring Hill College 3-0 (17-25, 10-25, 14-25) in a conference match at the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center Monday night.
Tuskegee (8-7, 6-5 SIAC) was led by
Pamela Allen with eight kills on 13 total attempts, while
Donovan Wingfield finished with six on 16 total attempts. Allen finished hitting .429 in the match, while Wingfield finished hitting .188.
Morgan Scrivens led Tuskegee with 17 assists, while
Zahria Radford added nine digs and
Janae Graham five in the loss.
Meanwhile, Spring Hill (14-7, 12-1 SIAC) was led by Katelyn Bobinger and Dorina Klinger with 10 kills each. Madison Seuzeneau added nine kills. Klinger led the Lady Badgers hitting .571, while Randi De'Armitt hit .44 and Bobinger .333 in the win by the Lady Badgers. Mallory Raulerson led Spring Hill with a game-high 39 assists.
The two teams traded points through the first 26 points in the opening game, until Spring Hill was able to extend the lead to 17-13 which forced a timeout by Tuskegee. The opening game saw 13 lead changes and 13 ties, until Spring Hill used back-to-back points to push the lead to four.
The Tigerettes continued to battle back in the opening game. After the timeout, Wingfield recorded a kill to trim the lead to four, 18-14. Spring Hill was able to extend the lead back to five (19-14), before an attack error brought Tuskegee back to within four at 19-15. The lead would be pushed to six (22-16), before Allen cut the deficit down to five with a kill at 22-16. However, Spring Hill scored the final three points of the opening game to take a 1-0 lead overall in the match.
The Tigerettes got a pair of kills from a trio of players on the opening set – Allen, Breda-Nixon and Wingfield – while Breda-Nixon hit .400 in the opening game.
The second game started off much the same way as the first did for the two teams, trading points through the first nine points. The second game saw four lead changes and three ties.
The Tigerettes fell behind early in the second game, before a kill from Allen tied the score at 4-all. However, Spring Hill took a 5-4 lead and pushed the lead to 7-4 to force a timeout by Tuskegee. The lead would grow to 11-4 forcing another timeout by head coach
Melissa Robinson. The Tigerettes were finally able to get through and break up the 10-0 run by Spring Hill, trimming the deficit to 14-5 on a service error by Spring Hill and used a kill by Wingfield to trim the deficit to 16-7. However, Spring Hill proved to be too much in the second game to take a 2-0 lead into intermission.
In third game, Spring Hill jumped ahead early before Allen put an end to the mini-run with a kill to trim the deficit to four (7-3). However, Spring Hill was able to score the next two points to force a Tuskegee timeout. Out of the timeout, Spring Hill scored the first point to extend the lead to seven before Breda-Nixon drew the Tigerettes to within six at 10-4 with a kill. The Tigerettes continued to fight, as each time Spring Hill would score they would add a point to keep the deficit at six.
After falling behind by nine, the Tigerettes used back-to-back points on a kill from Wingfield and an attack error by Spring Hill to trim the deficit to seven (14-7). The lead would grow to 12 (17-9), before Allen recorded another kill off of an assist by Rachel Wood. The two teams traded points over the next three, with Tuskegee trimming the deficit to 19-10. Another kill by Allen trimmed the deficit to 20-11, before Spring Hill pulled away for the win.
For the match, Tuskegee hit .114 and recorded 20 kills. The Tigerettes recorded 23 digs and four blocks on the defensive side of the net.
Tuskegee returns to action on Friday in their home opener, hosting Stillman College in an SIAC match-up. The match begins at 6 pm inside Chappie James Arena.
