JACKSONVILLE, Ala. | Rachel Brownlee scored in double figures for the seventh time this season, but it wasn't enough as Jacksonville State used 14 three-pointers to down Tuskegee 74-47 at Pete Mathews Coliseum Sunday afternoon.
Brownlee finished with 15 points to lead Tuskegee (1-7), including scoring 13 in the second half – which included 10 in the fourth quarter.
Demetries McNealey added nine and
Uche Ibebunjo eight in the loss. Ibebunjo also added a career-high 13 rebounds in the contest.
Morrison led NCAA Division I Jacksonville State (3-6) with 31 points, including setting a new single-game school record with 10 three-pointers. Morrison finished the day connecting on 10-of-21 shots from the floor, with only one of her shots coming from inside the arc. The 10 three-pointers by Morrison is the most by an NCAA Division I player this season, and the 14 by the Gamecocks also set a school record.
Bria Benson added 12 and Chloe Long 11 for the Gamecocks.
For the game, Tuskegee shot 34.8 (16-of-46) percent from the floor, including shooting 33.3 (4-of-12) percent from beyond the arc. They also shot 64.7 (11-of-17) percent from the free throw line, and won the rebounding battle 40-33.
Meanwhile, Jacksonville State finished shooting 41.3 (26-of-63) percent from the floor, and 36.8 (14-of-38) percent from beyond the arc. They also shot 66.7 (8-of-12) percent from three throw line, and forced 20 turnovers by Tuskegee.
Tuskegee was unable to stop the outside shooting of Jacksonville State in the first half, as the Gamecocks connected on 50 (9-of-18) percent for their shots from beyond the arc. Morrison led the onslaught of three-pointers as she connected on six of the nine in the first half.
Jacksonville State was able to put the game out of reach in the second quarter, as they outscored the Tigerettes 26-6. Following a
Rachel Brownlee jumper with 1:45 to play in the first quarter, Jacksonville State outscored the Tigerettes 29-6 that included a streak that included holding Tuskegee without a point for the final 3:51 of the half.
The Tigerettes were able to chip away after intermission, as they outscored Jacksonville State 14-13 in the third quarter. In that third quarter, the Tigerettes two leading scorers – Brownlee and McNealey – were able to get opening looks including a pair of three-pointers from McNealey.
In the third, Tuskegee was able to limit the outside looks for Jacksonville State as they only hit one three-pointer and did not get to the free throw line. They continued to fight back in the fourth quarter, scoring 16 points in the final stanza, including double figures from Brownlee.
The Tigerettes will return to action on Wednesday night on the road facing their second consecutive NCAA Division I member school, Alabama A&M University. Tip is set for 7 pm inside T.M. Elmore Gymnasium.
