Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | By: Travis Jarome

Golden Tigers upset 20th-ranked Montevallo

Josh Culver's putback with 1.2 seconds remaining seals the victory

MONTEVALLO, Ala. | Joshua Culver found himself on the end of a missed shot with defenders laying around him on the ground, and the clock winding down.

The freshman southpaw put up the ball up off the glass, and it fell in with just 1.2 seconds remaining to give Tuskegee a 53-51 upset over 20th-ranked Montevallo at Trustmark Arena on Wednesday night.

Camden Foster led Tuskegee (2-1) with 16 points and seven rebounds, while Elijah McMillan added 12. Leading scorer James Eads chipped in with nine, and Daniel Roach eight off the bench.

Although the teams battled back and forth for most of the game, the final four minutes finished with a flurry.

After an emphatic dunk by Eads gave Tuskegee a 46-44 lead, the game was tied a pair of times down the stretch. After Montevallo tied the game at 48-all, McMillian took a pass from Foster and connected on a back door lay-up to give Tuskegee a 50-48 lead with 1:53 remaining.

Montevallo had a chance to take the lead but missed a wide-open three-pointer, and then a put back; however, Montevallo tied the game at 51-all with just 28.1 seconds remaining setting the stage for the final seconds.

In the first eight minutes of the second half, the two teams four times and were tied two other times. The Golden Tigers took their first lead since the opening basket after Daniel Roach tied the game with a three-pointer, followed by a James Eads basket with 16:33 to play in the contest that gave the Golden Tigers a 32-30 lead.

The two teams would trade the lead until Foster hit a three-pointer with 14:46 to play giving the Golden Tigers a 35-34 lead as the shot clock expired, and then they took another lead following a lay-up by Montevallo when Foster hit another three-pointer with 11:08 remaining extending the lead to 38-36.

Tuskegee took their biggest lead of the game before the third media timeout with 7:30 remaining in the contest when Roach hit a turnaround to push the lead to 40-36. Foster pushed the lead to seven with 7:58 remaining on another three-pointer, this time from the left wing (43-36).

However, Montevallo came right back using less than a minute when they got six points from Terrell Lipkins. He scored three the old-fashioned way with 7:14 to play getting fouled on a lay-up, and then drained a three from the wing to trim the Tuskegee lead to 43-42 with 6:33 to play – forcing a timeout.

After Montevallo took a brief lead at 44-43, using a 6-0 run, Eads stepped to the line with 5:25 to play and connected on one-of-two free throws to tie the game at 44-all.

That set the stage for the final 4:34 of the game.

In the first half, the two teams traded the lead five times and were tied three different times. The biggest lead of the game for Montevallo was eight with 6:39 to play in the half, while Tuskegee's biggest lead of the half was two after the first basket.

Following the media timeout with 7:38 to play in the half, Tuskegee found themselves down 21-13 but continued to chip away. After a trio of free throws from Foster, the Golden Tigers were down just 21-16.

After a pair of Montevallo free throws pushed the lead back to eight (24-16), Tuskegee trimmed it to three following a McMillian three-pointer with just 2:17 to play in the half. The lead would stay at three until Foster followed up a missed shot with just four seconds remaining for the two-point halftime deficit (29-27).

Montevallo (1-1) was led by Bryant Orange with a game-high 17 points, while Terrell Lipkins added 15 and Talan Whitaker 10 in the loss. Tevin Worthy grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds.

The Golden Tigers return to action against another Peach Belt Conference member in Georgia Southwestern. Tip is set for 3 pm on Saturday afternoon inside Chappie James Arena.
