WILBERFORCE, OHIO– The Tuskegee University Golden Tigers' football team defeated the Marauders of Central State University 28-25. With temps that did not rise higher than 40 degrees, Tuskegee will take the victory back to Tuskegee, Alabama.
The Golden Tigers took an early 7-0 lead in the first quarter on a three-yard run by
Michael J. Thornton at the 9:07 mark.
Trevor Wylie held true and nailed the point after. The second quarter began quickly for Tuskegee when
Michael J. Thornton once again found the end zone on a two-yard dash. Wylie once again found the uprights for the extra point. Central State rallied back into contest on back-to-back scores but failed on both point after attempts. Going into the locker room at the conclusion of the first half the score was in favor of the Golden Tigers, 14-12.
In the third,
Michael J. Thornton found the end zone again on a 57-yard run; Wylie adjusted for a 15 mph wind gust to land the PAT. The next score also belonged Tuskegee when
Larry Cobb caught a 27-yard bomb from
Justin Nared. Wylie would continue his streak in PATs as he split the uprights for the extra point. The end of third saw a score by the Marauders to close the point deficit. Central State was able to score again in the fourth, however their efforts fell short as the Golden Tigers walked away with a narrow victory.
Kevin Lacey went 4-10-1 on the night for 71-yards, while
Justin Nared 1-4-0 for 27-yards. WR
Marquel Gardner tallied 57-yards on three receptions while
Michael J. Thornton rushed for 198-yards on 13 carries and three touchdown.
Defensively,
Osband Thompson led the Golden Tigers with 11 total tackles, all solo, three tackles for a loss of 19-yards and three sacks for a loss of 18-yards.
El'Malik Chinn finished with 10 tackles, all solo, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.
Kemuel Lawrence completed the contest with four punts for 139-yards, one of which was inside the twenty, and five kickoffs for 273-yards.
Tuskegee will travel to Fairfield, Alabama, on November 8, 2014 to take on the Miles College Golden Bears in the Western Division Championship game; kick-off is set for 4:00 pm. Miles defeated Stillman College 26-22.
