Leon Douglas' Golden Tigers came away unscathed during their most recent road trip during the MLK weekend, as Tuskegee finished a perfect 3-0 record this week with road victories in three different states. After dispatching Claflin with their first conference loss of the season at home, TU defeated Benedict 71-66 to give another foe in the SIAC their first conference loss of the season. Tuskegee followed this up with an 82-72 victory at Kentucky State on Saturday, before dispatching Lane in Jackson, Tenn. by a score of 85-76 on MLK Day. The victories amount to a season-high four-game winning streak, and the Golden Tigers now have an overall record of 9-8 (6-2 in the SIAC), with both of TU's conference losses coming by a combined total of seven points.
Tuskegee's first win of the week was the most impressive, defeating the reigning SIAC Champions who also managed to win their first game in the NCAA Tournament against Eckerd last season. Benedict led by as many as eight points with just under 14 minutes remaining in the opening half, but the Golden Tigers would fight to get a 32-31 lead over the home team at halftime. The largest lead for Tuskegee would come at the 13:50 mark of the second half, when TU led by as many as eight points.
Graham Olatunji led four double-digit scorers for TU, with 16 points. He also had four rebounds, and was the only Tuskegee player to block a shot, sending back three of them.
Richard Dixon finished with 14 points and a team-high nine rebounds, falling one board shy of a double-double.
Javier McKinney (13 points) and point guard
Kevin May (11 points) finished with a combined total of five steals in the other significant contributions in the win. Lamar Adkins finished with a 20-point, 11-rebound double-double in the losing cause for Benedict.
Camden Foster picked up a double-double, as he had 11 points and 13 rebounds in Tuskegee's win over the Thorobreds on Saturday. He also had team-highs in assists (three) and steals (two) for the Golden Tigers. There were a total of five double-digit scorers for Tuskegee, led by Dixon's game-high of 19 points. Three other TU players finished with more points than the leading scorer for KSU, as Elliott Dean (13 points), McKinney and Olatunji (12 points each) all outscored the duo of Earl Ruffin, Jr. and Brandon Darrett, who finished with 11 points each. The Thorobreds led by as many as five with just under eight minutes to go in the first half, but Tuskegee led 41-35 at halftime and led by as many as 12 points with 3:23 remaining.
Lane never took the lead Monday, as the Golden Tigers led by as many as 19 points to complete a perfect week on the road. Dixon scored 27 points, which is his second-largest scoring output on the season. Three other players contributed double-digit scoring for Tuskegee, as Olatunji finished with a 20-point, 10-rebound double-double. Dean had 18 points to go with a pair of steals, and
Kevin May tied Olatunji's game-high of three steals as he also chipped in ten points and a team-high four assists. Foster was two points away from another double-double, as he had ten rebounds to go with eight points. The Golden Tigers were on fire from the floor, shooting 64.7 percent from the field for the entire game (33-of-51), including 68 percent in the second half.
A 4-0 record on Tuskegee's largest road stretch of the season (and a five-game winning streak) can be achieved if the Golden Tigers can pick up a victory Monday night against Stillman in Tuscaloosa. The two top teams in the SIAC West Division will face off, as Douglas will look to lead TU to another win against his former team in the same town where he made a name for himself during his playing days at the University of Alabama. A three-game home stand awaits after the in-state rivalry business is handled.
