MACON, Ga. – The Tuskegee baseball team opened postseason play at the 2025 Cricket SIAC Baseball Championship on Thursday afternoon but fell to No. 2 seed Edward Waters 10-1 at historic Luther Williams Field.
The loss sends the Golden Tigers into the elimination bracket, where they will face Benedict on Friday at 9 a.m. ET.
Tuskegee (19-30) battled early, but a big second inning proved costly as Edward Waters (34-16) broke open the game with five runs in the frame and never looked back.
After a scoreless first inning, the Tigers loaded the bases with no outs in the second. A two-run single followed by a two-RBI double pushed across four runs before a sacrifice fly capped the big inning and gave Edward Waters a 5-0 advantage.
The Golden Tigers responded in the fourth inning as James Slaughter led off with a single and eventually scored on a fielder's choice RBI from Scott Williams to cut the deficit to 6-1. However, Edward Waters answered right back in the bottom half of the frame, adding three more runs in the fifth to extend their lead to 9-1.
Tuskegee struggled to find momentum offensively against Edward Waters starter Anthony Bayy, who went seven innings, allowing eight hits but just one run while striking out three. Josh Taylor tossed two shutout innings in relief to close the door.
Amare Morgan started on the mound for Tuskegee, pitching 4.1 innings and allowing eight earned runs on seven hits to take the loss. Rodney Mudd II provided 3.2 innings of relief, giving up just one earned run while battling through control issues.
Offensively, Tuskegee collected eight hits on the day. Slaughter paced the attack with a pair of hits, while Ryan Morrow also finished 2-for-4. Alex Glass reached base three times with a hit and two walks, while Williams added the lone RBI.
Edward Waters posted a balanced effort with ten hits overall, highlighted by Misael Ramos and Tyler Smith who combined for four hits, three doubles and four RBI. Dannon Smith and Chase Morris also drove in runs in the win.
Despite the setback, Tuskegee will have an opportunity to extend its postseason run on Friday morning when they take on No. 3 seed Benedict in a must-win elimination game. First pitch is set for 9 a.m. ET.
