Tuskegee University head women's basketball coach, Trelanne Powell has announced the signing of forwards Tamia Willingham-King and Rachel Obedin to National Letters of Intent. Both will compete starting the 2019-2020 season.
King, a 5-foot, 8-inch forward from Decatur Ala. joins the Golden Tigers after spending the past two seasons at Snead State Community College where she averaged 10.2 points per game along with 9.4 rebounds per outing. In 19 games last season, she scored in double figures, including a season-high 23 points against Shelton State on an efficient 56 percent shooting from the field. Last February against Wallace State Community College-Hanceville, King nailed four three-pointers, scoring a game-high 20 points.
She ended her career averaging 11.3 points per outing and 8.4 boards per game. "Tamia brings perimeter scoring." Head coach Trelanne Powell stated. "She's a guard with a high motor that can not only make shots from beyond the arc, but is also capable of getting to the rim." Powell noted.
Obedin will don the Crimson and Old Gold after playing one season at Arizona Western. The Tucson, Ariz. native played in 20 games this past season and led the team in field goal percentage at 48 percent. During her senior season at Tucson High Magnet School, Obedin led her team to a 25-4 record and perfect 5-0 mark in the conference where she scored 11 points per game and 11.2 rebounds per contest.
According to Max Preps, she was ranked the 18th best player in the state of Arizona. "Rachel will help us stretch the floor with her ability to play outside of the paint." Powell mentioned. "She is a long face-up four that will
help protect the basket and is also capable of making shots around the perimeter". Said Powell.
This past season TU produced the school's best record in 19 years, finishing with a 20-6 overall mark, the program's first 20-win season since 2000. TU finished one game shy of playing for the 2019 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) championship game and ended the year with a 13-3 league record.
