A big third period from the Tuskegee University women's basketball team and a career day for
Alexis Carter was enough for the Golden Tigers to coast past Spring Hill College Wednesday afternoon at Bill Harris Arena at the 2019 SIAC Basketball Tournament. The victory would mark the first time Skegee advanced past its first game of the tournament since the 2013-14 season.
In her first season as head coach,
Trelanne Powell has her team with the school's first 20-win season in 19 years, when the Golden Tigers finished 20-8 under Belinda Roby.
Carter scored a game and career-high 32 points along with 16 rebounds, six steals and five blocked shots. She was also 2-of-3 from three-point range.
Jade Wilson added 16 points and six boards on the day.
Normesha Pitts came off the bench to chip in eight points including two from beyond the arc.
Skegee dominated in the paint outscoring SHC 40-26. The Golden Tigers had plenty of success in transition scoring 18 fast break points while holding its opponent to zero.
TU held its biggest lead (39-27) of the first half at the 3:34 mark, but the Badgers managed to cut the 12 point deficit to three 39-36 by halftime.
A huge third period turned out to be the difference when the Golden Tigers pulled away scoring 23 points to Spring Hill's eight. Defensively, the Badgers were held to 26 percent from the field on 7-of-26 second half shooting.
The Golden Tigers will have Thursday off and face the winner of Albany State and Kentucky State Friday at 1 p.m.
