BIRMINGHAM | Miles College used a walk-off single and an offensive explosion in the first inning to sweep Tuskegee University 3-2 and 13-0 in a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) doubleheader at Rickwood Field Saturday afternoon.
Tuskegee (9-19, 5-6) used a pair of homeruns in the first game to keep the game close and force extra innings.
Jalen Luter hit his team-leading third homerun in the top half of the first inning to give Tuskegee a 1-0 lead, before Miles answered with one of their own to the game.
Junior
Ricky Green tied the game up in the fifth inning for Tuskegee with a two-out, two-strike solo homerun; however, it wasn't enough as Miles was able to push across a run in the bottom of the eighth after three consecutive hits to win the opener.
Trey Nelson, winner of his last three conference starts, got a no-decision in the contest after going seven innings and allowing two runs – only one earned – off of six hits.
Jordyn Thomas (1-1) suffered the loss, facing four batters in the eighth inning and allowing one run off of three hits.
Gemini Jackson went 2-for-3 for the Golden Tigers in the opener, getting two of the team's five hits.
Miles (24-12, 11-3 SIAC) used a six-run first inning to pull away from Tuskegee and complete the sweep with a 13-0 victory.
The Golden Bears picked up 13 hits, while Tuskegee was held to just four in the loss – all by different players.
Eugene Mabota (0-3) suffered the loss, working three innings and allowing seven runs (six earned) off of six hits, while walking five. Green and
Daniel Croom worked out of the bullpen for three innings, combining to allow six runs off of seven hits.
The two teams will meet tomorrow afternoon, closing the series with a single game starting at 1 pm at Rickwood Field.
