LAKELAND, Fla. (March 15, 2014) – The Tuskegee University men's basketball team (19-11), recent winner of the 2014 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Basketball Tournament, advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA II South Regional Tournament, by upsetting the #1 seeded Florida Southern Moccasins, 98-95, on Sunday evening on the home court of the Moccasins.
Florida Southern (26-5), ranked #10 in NCAA Division II, defeated Tuskegee back in December, 106-90, at Jenkins Field House in Lakeland, Fla., but the #8 seeded Golden Tigers avenged that loss by knocking the Moccasins out of the NCAA Division II South Regional Tournament on their home floor.
Elliot Dean led the Golden Tigers with 31 points, including 9-of-10 from the charity strife.
Richard Dixon added 23 points, converting 7-of-8 free throws and
Camden Foster nailed 18 points and had 9 caroms. The Golden Tigers shot an astounding 81 percent from the free-throw line and 56 percent from the floor. After leading Florida Southern by 12 points in the first half, Tuskegee carried a 38-35 lead into the dressing room at halftime.
Kevin Capers, the game's highest scorer, poured in 46 points for the Moccasins. Garrett Putman had a game-high 10 rebounds.
The Golden Tigers, making their fourth NCAA Tournament appearance, got 36 points from the bench players.
The Golden Tigers will face the Lions of North Alabama today, who defeated the Tampa Spartans, 72-68. The Tuskegee-North Alabama semifinal matchup game will tipoff at 6:30 p.m. CT.
Tuskegee split with North Alabama back in November 2013, winning 85-82 at Tuskegee and losing 88-80 at North Alabama.
